Nitrous Oxide Q&A

What is nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas that you breathe through a rubber nosepiece. Once the medication enters your body, it encourages a calm, euphoric feeling, allowing you to relax during dental treatment.

Nitrous oxide works almost instantly and wears off quickly. Following your appointment, there’s no downtime or recovery period so that you can return to work or other routine activities right away.

At Adler Dental Group, we also offer analgesics, as appropriate, to ensure your comfort during dental procedures. Dr. Adler holds a patent on a special injection technique that numbs you without the numb, puffy feeling.

Who can benefit from nitrous oxide?

Anyone who experiences anxiety is a good candidate for nitrous oxide. You might also benefit if you:

  • Have a sensitive gag reflex
  • Have difficulty sitting still for extended periods
  • Have extremely sensitive teeth
  • Have a low pain tolerance

Our team might also recommend nitrous oxide if you need to undergo several dental procedures during a single appointment.

What does sedation dentistry with nitrous oxide involve?

At Adler Dental Group, our team performs sedation dentistry with nitrous oxide in-office.

At the beginning of the appointment, our team places a rubber mask over your nose and asks you to breathe in. You inhale a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen, which promotes sensations of relaxation and euphoria.

Once you're comfortable, we go to work. Throughout treatment, we adjust the level of nitrous oxide that you receive, ensuring your comfort. While under sedation, you might feel drowsy, but you won’t fall asleep. You’re still able to respond to your provider if we have questions or need you to follow instructions.

Following treatment, you can leave the office and return to work or your other normal activities after our team administers a dose of oxygen to get you going.

Is nitrous oxide safe?

Nitrous oxide is safe and usually well-tolerated. Because it’s only a mild sedative, children and teens can also benefit.
