Implants Q&A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are replacement teeth. But unlike dentures, which you have to remove regularly, or bridges, which have to be replaced every decade or so, dental implants are a long-term solution.

They’re durable because Dr. Adler affixes your implants in your mouth so that they work just like your natural teeth.

When you choose dental implants, Dr. Adler surgically implants a metal post into your jawbone. This implant serves as the root for your replacement tooth.

Once your jaw has healed and the post has integrated into your jawbone, the replacement tooth mounted on it looks and feels just like a natural tooth. The whole process can take up to three months to complete, and our team at Adler Dental Group doesn’t rush the process because we want to ensure that your implant(s) have a solid foundation.

You won’t need to worry about your new tooth shifting in your mouth or needing to be replaced. With proper oral care, your dental implant could last for the long term.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

The benefits of dental implants include:

  • Durability
  • Natural appearance
  • Ease of care

The implanted root also stimulates your jaw, which helps keep the bone healthy and strong.

Is dental implant surgery painful?

The surgery to place dental implants is typically well-tolerated by most patients, often compared to what you would experience with a filling. Prior to undergoing implant surgery, we perform an oral exam and review your medical history to ensure that implants are the best option for you.

You need to have good oral health and a substantial amount of jawbone to be considered a good candidate for implants.

If you’re nervous about the implant procedure, we can offer you sedation to keep you comfortable throughout the process. Dr. Adler also holds a patent on a special injection technique that makes you numb without the numb, puffy feeling.

How long does it take to heal after dental implant surgery?

People heal at different rates, but you can usually expect the implant site to heal within 10-14 days.

However, a significant feature of dental implants is the humanmade “root” that provides a stable foundation for the crown. The biocompatible material used for the implant root encourages your body to build up bony tissue in your jaw that firmly anchors the implant in place. This process, called osseointegration, can take up to three months.

Once your implant site has healed, you return to Adler Dental Group, and we fit you with a new custom crown that matches the size, shape, and color of your other natural teeth.
